Schoolchildren from across the county will be taking part in the Lincolnshire School Games as part of a number of celebrations for the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.
On Wednesday 27th June, the day the Olympic Torch comes to Lincoln, 1,500 young athletes will be competing in 21 different sporting competitions at Lincoln Castle Academy and other sites throughout the city.
The Games are made up of four levels of activity: competition in schools, between schools, at county/area level and a national finals event. Taking place at the beginning of May, the most talented young people in the UK will be selected to compete in 4 Olympic venues to build on the excitement of the 2012 Games.
Gareth Short, School Games Project Officer at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said: “The Games will be a great opportunity for pupils to feel part of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games legacy. It will be a fantastic day, especially as the pupils also get tickets to see the Olympic torch that evening.”
Headteachers, School Games organisers and many other partners from across the county have played an important role in helping to stage the event.
An Opening Ceremony will take place at Yarborough Leisure Centre at 10.00am, followed by sporting competitions at Lincoln Castle Academy, Yarborough Leisure Centre, Lincoln College Ravendale Sports Ground and Christ’s Hospital School. A Closing Parade will wrap up the day’s events at 3.00pm at Ravendale Sports Ground.
Over £128m of Lottery and Government funding has been invested to support the School Games.
