Wheelchair Sports Programme

The Wheelchair Sports Programme encourages more children with a disability to take part in sport.

The programme, which launched in 2009 thanks to funding from NHS Lincolnshire and the support of Lincolnshire Co-operative, aims to increase the number of physically disabled young people, regularly taking part in quality Physical Education, regardless of their education setting.. Without this funding and support the programme would not exist today.

The programme is mainly delivered in secondary schools within the county, our Wheelchair Inclusion Officer Graham Birkett also attends events to promote the scheme, such as the Lincolnshire show.

Participants can access a new sporting experience which is both challenging and fun, the programme has seen people who may not normally engage in physical activity, perform and excel within the Wheelchair Sports Programme environment.

Pupils have gained knowledge and a better understanding of disability sport, both locally and nationally.

The Wheelchair Sports Programme involves 170 manual sports wheelchairs, 10 power chairs and 18 trailers to store and transport the equipment around the county. The primary goal of the project is to increase participation in physical activity for those with a physical impairment, with related health and developmental benefits, using wheelchair sports as the medium for delivery. The programme is also used to raise awareness of disabilities and disability sport. The project is fully inclusive, allowing disabled and non-disabled participants to take part in the same sports session.

The Wheelchair Sports Programme is currently being funded by The Health and Wellbeing Fund (NHS Lincolnshire and Lincolnshire County Council), supported by Lincolnshire Co-Operative and has been delivered in the following educational settings:

19,000+ people have played wheelchair basketball since the programme began
